Perplexing Diagnostics upon Shane's Gaming Laptop/Tablet

Shane Update

GV301Q Asus Gaming Laptop/Tablet

Diagnostics: It was found that pertaining to the c-usb port that the owner was utilizing to attempt to power-on his device had become damaged and inoperable for power; however the port may be used for dispensing of energy (already tested) to charge other devices such as a phone, as the dispensing of energy still is functional so long as the alternate c-usb port is powered up via the laptop's power supply.

Preliminary Diagnostics were completed with the finding that the particular c-usb port that the owner had been attempting to use to power on his device appears to have become damaged and non-usable for charging the laptop only; yet still usable to use for output power and that using the alternate c-usb allows for laptop to power on.

Additional findings and notes passed on to the owner are:

1.) While in the owner's presence upon initially opening the unit, a magnet fell out. It was apparent that something or the previous repair tech (uncle?) had removed the glued magnet for whatever reason, yet the other magnet was still glued in place (the magnet was re-glued, no charge).

2.) There is an unused connector within the laptop referred to as a "Debug" connector that was found to be in the open position (this is not likely to be the factory position. Re-securing clip was closed, no charge).

3.) Upon visiting the laptop maker's website, a copy of the owner's manual was obtained and forwarded to the owner via email and contained on this website (no charge).

4.) Email links to all the available parts for owner's product were found on ebay and the link was forwarded to the owner should he wish to replace any of the damaged parts, possibly battery, charger, or more than likely motherboard (no charge).

5.) Although the owner arrived with all 10 missing case screws, there were 7 of the 10 replaced which were found around the shop. (no charge).

6.) It was shown to the owner while he was present the procedure to remove the internal battery, however there is no charge if he feels more comfortable leaving it up to me to perform the exchange. (no charge).

7.) The latest bios update was obtained from the manufacturer's website (latest version updated 6/6/23) however it was quickly noticed that a functioning battery is requisite to doing any flash work.

Some additional information availed to the owner are:

Battery is either needing to be replaced due to age (more than 2 years old according to Asus), possibly damaged, or other reason.

The following is the back-story to this project's assessment.

1.) Owner called informing of an inoperable laptop.

2.) When owner arrived he was missing part of the power supply ($4.99) and after locating one here he indicated where the power was to be plugged but we witnessed the same results as he described over the phone. (at this point the fee to owner is $4.99)

3.) Upon further inspection it was noticed that all case screws were missing, owner stated that it was possibly his uncle that was in the unit while trying to self-service the inoperable condition of the laptop.

4.) Following the removal of the case cover and battery, the owner left the unit in my care.

5.) While further testing of other power supplies that were found around the shop, coupled with the usual diagnostics procedures in an attempt to power on the laptop, proved fruitless.

6.) Using various tools, temperature sensor gun, multimeters, and probe, it was found that the particular c-usb connector's charging functionality had become damaged which rendered the unit inoperable.

7.) Several emails and phone calls explaining each step of my findings were made to the owner to keep him informed as to findings.

8.) Diagnostics fee on website show that $35.00 is the stated charge to owner, which the owner gave consent to prior to leaving the shop's location.

9.) The unit was shown to power on using the alternate c-usb connector which the owner appeared to be unaware of (it's located in a sort of hidden spot)

10.) At this point, $35.00 is the expressed Diagnostics fee (despite the computerrepair website's Fee section clearly stating that overnight assessments are $68.00, the reduced price was agreeable).

Please Note: It is advised that owner Purchase a battery. It is paramount to have a properly functioning battery or else the unit will perform oddly due to the fact that the particular laptop/tablet operates it's bios off of the main battery. Otherwise the owner should keep the defective battery out of the laptop to curtail the laptop acting oddly (especially noticed were the odd behavior when attempting to come out of sleep mode.

Also, without a functioning user / bios battery it would be necessary to alter the date and time in the machine each and every time the unit was unplugged and plugged back in using the power adapter as the sole source of memory.

$35.00+4.99=$39.99 This covers diagnostics fee and ac-to-power-brick cable.

Any further work will require the next higher fee of $68.00, replacing the former fee of $35.00
