To be totally honest, I didn't think very highly of the chainsaw when It was purchased (it's a lot of plastic). I even made a video of the up-and-coming decomposition of plastics and rubbers prediction, and incorporated a few moments within the video to point out the amount of plastics even on deadly stuff, such as a chainsaw.
Well....it's been well over the corporate-conscience of warranty period, maybe even two years that it's been working without incident. I use the chainsaw more than the average chimp for a number of reasons that warrant mentioning, but staying on the topic of review, this Craftsman chainsaw is the bomb You gotta get one of these.
It is light-weight, requires no 2-stroke oil/fuel, it is not obnoxiously loud and hasn't any smells except the pleasant smell of another murdered tree or limb. How does it run if it doesn't need the usual fuel? Glad you asked, it's electric.
Before you balk about the notion of anyone bothering to develop an electric chainsaw that requires an available extension cord and some electricity, this thing packs a punch with 12amps of energetic force (it cuts around 3 foot-wide logs without a hitch). There's no need to stop intermittently to add fuel or clean the air-filter, it just works.
As a young adult I had earned the nick-name of, "master of disaster", mostly because maybe I lose focus and mess up stuff from time to time. I've sized this Craftsman chainsaw up pretty good and feel pretty confident that it might out-live me. I mean the thing is a beast and it's very comfortable to work with. This is a durable chainsaw, despite the plastics which have yet to break or crack.
Then one day um, yesterday as a matter of fact, it broke! I knew it! Plastics, those damn plastics are going to be the life of me! I searched online for replacement parts for the cmecs600 16" chainsaw and all I found was vendors posting notices of how the manufacturer is no longer supplying parts for the model chainsaw.
I knew it! Capitalism and Plastics is like spit and shoo.
No replacement parts! huh?
So the problem was that the hole at the front of the hull which is used to adjust the slack in the chain wasn't working. I'm half-blind so after hunting down a whisk-brush, magnifying glass, flashlight, and cigarette I quickly realized the problem. There was no slot for the screwdriver, the adjuster nut was missing or something. I conjured that the quick remedy would be to find a nut that fits and a grinder to make a groove and voila~, I'd be back into business. That didn't happen though.
I mean it really is a great saw and I simply had to have another if no replacement parts were available. So off to lowes.com I went. I ordered another one the same craftsman electric saw. It will be here in about a week. Not good enough, a week is too long... but I bought it anyway (the thing is only $80-bucks!).
About a year ago I made a video that had a comment about the chainsaw. In the video was said,
"...and look at this pile of capitalist plastic crap..",
and,
"...even the knob on the side to adjust the tension of the chain is made of plastic. How long do you think that crap will last?".
Well, long story-short, while trying to articulate the threaded steel shaft further out the end of the saw so I can get a nut on it, I remembered what was mentioned in the video about where the adjuster was located.
I will never forget how guilty I felt for feeling so sorry for me.
The adjuster knob is plastic(!) and located on the side of the chainsaw (!!!)x(????)=!!
Oh that's just Great!
So this damn thing is not broken and I can re-assemble it because the adjuster knob is on the side of the unit (not in the front of the hull).
Damnit craftsman, you got me.
So for anybody looking for an awesome simple, reliable chainsaw for around the house or farm, the model is cm (stands for crafts-man) ecs (= electric chain saw) 600 (?).
Lowes and Sears sell the unit, but until one breaks down, I wouldn't fret too much about the lack of replacement parts, this thing isn't made of that cheap brittle, easily cracked plastic that we find down at the dollar tree (no disrespect to dollar tree by the way, another bomb), this is that life-tyme plastic (yeah, I know).
So in summation, if you need a bloody chainsaw, consider the 12amp electric model and make friends with your neighbors ears.
