We have all seen the crack that the monopoly stores offer us in solar lighting.
When is enough enough?
Solar lights are a great idea; but in the hands of the capitalists, a good idea is completely perverted for profit.
Many of us have purchased the lawn lights sold in the protected big box stores only to find they are short lived.
Oftentimes the ornamental solar lawn lights are destroyed by lawnmowers or the internal batteries prematurely die, ultimately ending up as litter.
Have you ever wonder why that is?
Is Solar energy a failure or does corporate solar ensure the failure to provide the marketplace with long-lasting products?
Spoiler alert: If the capitalizers didn't skimp on protective items that OUGHT to be incorporated into their solar lawn lights, this page would have no purpose. Profits made by not adding the circuitry that protects the battery and lights is what I see happening here.
I have literally opened innumerable types of lawn lights after they've become defective to find that some were damaged due to the manufacturer not having the battery compartment impervious to water; other lights show problems with the solar panels becoming so cloudy that they are barely recognizable as solar panels; still others show that internal wiring that has become rusted out and no longer allowing a proper connection; but aside from the water problems I'd have to say that the number one problem is the LACK OF an LVD and OVD (low-voltage disconnect and over-voltage disconnect).
The battery has no choice but to fail prematurely (unless you are fortunate enough to live in an area where there is dependable daily sunshine).
So although the corporate lawn lights might work well in Florida for more than a year, here in Ohio an astute owner of the corpo-lights will be consumed swapping the higher-priced rechargeable batteries semi-often to keep the lights alive. If the owner is not astute, the battery may end up exploding it's yellowish grime thereby rendering the lawn lights as a wasted investment (but dammit didn't that box they came in look so awesome?). Keep your box, stare at it often.
Invariably, sooner-than-later, the corporate solar lights just fade away into obscurity, usually as a result of the proud owner of the yard lights tucking them into a basement or closet or garage or trash.
The lights are no longer working as anticipated.
Here's something you've never heard anywhere else:
The reason those nifty solar-powered lights do not last more than a year (unless you live in sunnier locations than Ohio, that is) is due simply that the lights don't offer a low-voltage protection to disconnect the load (lights) from the battery when the sun hasn't shined in two days or more.
Typically the lights will now be activated night and day because there isn't any sun; although the lights are not lit up, the load is still a drain on the battery ensuring that you return for more replacement crack from the monopoly store.
It's like this: If you have a flashlight and there's a battery in there that is fully charged, it will light-up when you hit the switch. However, if you leave the light on all night long, the battery is depleted and eventually will be of no use.
If the load (lights) are permitted to keep the battery in a fully-drained state, the battery eventually dies and will not hold a charge for very long when the sun finally comes back out.
If the capitalists cared to take the pride, effort and expense of adding a LVD (low voltage disconnect) switch, the battery would never be permitted to be fully depleted, ensuring that the life of the product is endured (as opposed to buying replacement batteries every 5 or 6 months).
As a protection to preserve the battery, the lesser of the two evils is to disconnect the load (in this case, lights) pending a sunny day when the batteries can be rejuvenated again.
An LVD switch does this automatically without user-input.
The point is, to the best of my knowledge, there is not one solitary capitalist store where that particular protection is added to solar lighting and that's why they fail so early.
Let's say that you obtain your new yard lights from any monopoly store and bring them home and wait up till night-time to enjoy the fruits of your labor (LOL) and find that they work just fine until dawn when the sun comes up and turns the lights off while at the same time rejuvenating the battery for the coming-night's use.
Perfect...until the sun doesn't shine the next day.
It's at that point when your lights are noticed to begin to dim with each passing hour of the next evening when they become activated.
Let's say there's no sun for 5 days, now what?
Is that battery going to take on a full charge again? It might take some charge, but rest-assured your days are marked and that battery is going to be useless garbage (hence the lights are not reliable).
We can do better than this.
The move from dependency upon monopoly-interest(s) of the "Public" utility, when one choice for an electric provider is no choice, Lights are the easiest thing to take off-grid.
A recent undertaking was to create automagically-activated lighting.
The photos show the first two installations upon a deck. Two sets of 100w 12v solar panels connected in series and parallel to a 420ah (amp-hour) battery, create the off-grid lighting.
Although the solar input is 24v, the Charge Controller converts the energy down to 12v to accommodate the system. voltage.
Already the solar lights (LED's from 12v power source) enhance the surroundings.
Using a photo-sensor wired between the battery and the lights, permits energy to the lights only in the evening (or during no-light situations).
When the sun finally comes back out, the recharging process starts all over again.
The charge controller, a device between the battery and solar panel array, comes with a LVD (low-voltage disconnect) to ensure that the battery is charged during the daylight hours (and never over-charged), but also never allows the load (lights) to kill it's power source (the battery bank).
Another requisite before the lights are permitted to turn on, are dependent upon another device wired between the battery and the lights. Motion Sensors are motion-sensored switches.
The system. is set up so that when there is no need for lights (no bodies presently tripping the motion-sensors field of range), they automatically turn off. The system. "knows" when lighting is needed as it senses motion to activate. Each sensor has an adjustable dial that allows the lights to stay on between 5 minutes (that's what I left the sensors set at) but are adjustable up to 20 minutes (if there's no activity). If there's something moving, the lights stay on for another duration before the next check for motion.
Since the motion sensors can be set at a wide-range of operable duration once motion is activated, the sensor units can be used in other areas such as powering on security cameras and alarms, etc.
The setup has yet another device incorporated into the system.. Since it is not desirable (or practical) to turn on lights when it's already daytime, the motion-sensor switch is dependent on a photo-sensor switch.
The photo-sensor switch is programmed to only work during the night-time or low-light situations. When the photo-sensor senses no light, the motion-sensors become powered and if motion is sensed, the lights illuminate.
Energy stored in the battery will remain in the battery until two requisites are met, that being dusk and motion.
With AC lights, what are your predominant choices?
Tubes or bulbs.
Forced AC vs 12v Lighting
For the Utility Monopolies that seek profit, AC is the public's only option when building a house.
"Lawmakers" financed by the monopoly interests created Codes Departments to dictate which type of electricity is allowed in the housing industry and more.
This creates a windfall of profit(eering) even to this evolved day of 2019.
The fact is, adult humans ought to be able to choose which type of electricity, instead the lawmakers even made going without electricity illegal (no joke). There's even a few States that now have a "sun tax".
And oddly enough, a bird can choose what material to use for it's house but a human is laden with so many laws and profitable (for the few) dictates that the public is completely crushed by the entities that permit no deviation or advancement toward coming up with solutions to combat our Nation's present leading position within the world as the most indebted nation on the planet
We need to do better than this because there is an end to the debt-trail.
If the system. is not working, our Nation simply must push on to a better direction.
12v power, not from the 110v grid, is power!
The cost to operate an item or appliance that is powered directly to the same voltage power source, is minuscule compared to the complete loss of energy in the AC to any other voltage conversion process.
12v lighting from a 12v power source (batteries), offer numerous advantages to the end-user.
Grid electricity will consume more energy to convert their electricity to the voltages of your appliances, this is due to the conversion hardware (usually a step-down transformer).
DC is always more cost-effective.
Converting AC electricity to other voltages is costly, due partly in the additional cost of the transformer device itself.
The additional device is usually placed on every power cord (such as the brick located in the power wire of most laptops), or installed somewhere in the appliance itself (as in most fans, desktop computer, or radios).
Converting from 110v all the way down to (whatever your appliance or electronic device is rated for), is in of itself loss of energy.
On-Grid electricity is full of hidden surprises.
The monopoly bills show such ambiguous laundering words such as, "Customer Charge" and "Distribution related component" fee and "Recovery Charge" and "Bypassable Generation and Transmission related component" charge .... the departments that oversee the "public" utilities is more of a facade than a democratic reality.
With the complete breakdown of a democratic decision, what's left of our polity dares not audit the monopoly fees and charges lest they lose their "base" (to quote Bush Jr's Corporate Address referencing who was the base of the polity.
This being reminiscent of a long-standing archaic chasm of "The Business of Government, is Business).

The public simply is not permitted to be made aware enough to contemplate a plan to create a self-sustaining family-based power-source of their own.
The monopoly interests prevail in what content is pumped into a brain and what is not, they own all of the media, hence the minds of the masses.
If I create a newspaper out of my garage and regardless of whether it's distributed freely or for profit, I'm going to jail.
Monopoly interests "pushed" (friendly word for financed) for a law that prohibits the common man or woman from creating a newspaper without first agreeing to a slew of legalese, then there's the need for much finances to pay off all of the agencies that "protect our freedoms", and still with the economy the way it is in 2019 your printing expedition will simply fail in a few years via the ever-changing gimmickry of the law and the law-"makers" (in my most humble opinion).
Yet because the "persons" (according to the checks and balances of the "Supreme" Court which actually granted corporations personal private statuses as "persons") "we" still teach our children of the freedom of the press and all that goes into printing news.
Since almost all of America's printed media are from two primary sources, Gannet on the East Coast and Knight-Ridder on the West Coast (this was the fact back in my younger years, it wouldn't surprise me if there's no longer two monopolies at the monopoly board...I've heard a lot of this Murdoch cancer so maybe the company names have changed by now), we are ensured of basically only one or two viewpoints.
This puts us all at risk and at a disadvantage.
Okay I'm getting off-track a bit, but my point is that if the public were able to hear another viewpoint from something other than the upper-class monopoly-types, they might be apt to do something about the fall from grace and our Nation's Present Worth
To close that topic up, let me clarify, the monopoly media, whether online, printed, aired or televised, might inform you that it takes 10 years to pay off an off-grid solar addition to your home, but this is very misleading because they will stop after making such a claim, and now your mind also stops with "oh wow, ten years is a long time". What monopolistic-interests won't tell you is that the system. basically lasts forever!
In other words, if your Grandfather purchased solar panels and created an off-grid power-plant in his day for his family, you'd be basking in free-energy for you and your family today (unless trees fell on each of the solar panels, then all bets are off).
