There was just enough marble left over from the cap to make a border around the base. 
And I even had enough energy to place a bunch of stuff on the sidewalk dry (uninstalled; without mortar and without custom-cuts just to get a feel of what it might look like).
Mom was preferring any other design for the walkway though.
